Hockey under a retractable dome? It’s true! Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena, opened in 1961, was one of the most unique arenas ever built, and amazingly, was the oldest NHL facility still in use when it was finally replaced in 2010. Originally built as the home for the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, the building soon turned into the city’s center of hockey, housing the AHL Pittsburgh Hornets until the Penguins NHL expansion franchise was awarded in 1967. After two decades of NHL struggles for the Penguins franchise, Mario Lemieux arrived, and Mellon became one of the centers of the hockey universe! While it lacked the luxury suites and modern amenities of many newer arenas, Mellon witnessed countless great moments in its history, including the back-to-back Stanley Cup Championship teams of 1990-91 and 1991-92.
