For the first time ever, artist Jon Lomberg and Astronomy magazine are releasing a limited-edition print of the revised version of Lombergs classic Portrait of the Milky Way mural commissioned by the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
Since its creation in 1992, this has been considered one of the most accurate depictions of our Milky Way Galaxy ever made. Lomberg collaborated with astronomers Jeff Goldstein and Leo Blitz to create this highly accurate view of our Milky Way galaxy for display in the Museums Where Next, Columbus? gallery (19922002). Working with the best astronomical data available, Lomberg, Goldstein, and Blitz plotted a computergenerated map of the Milky Way on the canvas. Then along the galaxys spiral arms, they carefully positioned more than 300 known objects, including nebulae, globular clusters, and star clusters.
Lomberg recently revised the original painting to incorporate scientific discoveries made since its original creation in 1992. These include exoplanets discovered by the Kepler telescope, the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy, and a new geometry for our own Orion Arm.
This magnificent 39 x 25 glossy reproduction comes with a finders guide to help identify the many real clusters, nebulae, and other objects included in the painting.
